Starship Robot Redesign
The initial design space for this project is to investigate how the current fleet of Purdue's starship robots, being utilized for food delivery, could thus be leveraged in other ways. The main task is to design a starship system beyond food delivery that enables new kinds of human-to-human interactions. Potential design areas include:
- Campus Security - Message delivery - Campus tours or navigation - Campus-wide games This project involved the creative reimagining of the starship robots through necessary background research and user interviews to understand current attitudes toward the automated delivery systems. These combined insights enabled the team to sketch, storyboard, and prototype a new design concept and test it through user feedback. The solution and how does it work? Our group redesigned the starship to serve as a security droid. This solution utilizes an already-existing Starship app whereby a user most definitely may request a security escort robot. According to the storyboards, the user first opens the application and types his or her destination. The application then presents options of all available robots around. The user then selects a robot, from which this robot arrives and begins leading the user to his or her destination. The security droid will have sensors that will keep track of the user's proximity to ensure he is closely following. If the user falls too far back, then the robot stops and waits for them to be in a nearby position while catching his breath until he/she feels safe again. Confirm your destination with the robot, then follow it to the last location. The user upon arrival can grade his experience of the trip to allow further improvement. Moreover, this application has a panic button linked to the campus police, through which users can notify them immediately in the case of feeling harassed or threatened. It is rather reassuring for the students, making this service not only practical but also very safe. The solution joins technology and safety to ensure a flawless and secure time on campus. |
